Jelly Roll 1600 Quilt

The other day Susan of Blackberry Creek Home Arts posted about another fast, easy jelly roll quilt. I saw the pictures on her blog and followed the link to the directions for the Jelly Roll 1600 quilt.

It sounded so interesting, I had to try it myself. You start by sewing 40 2 1/2" by width of fabric (a jelly roll) strips together like you are making binding. Here is my looooong strip.

Then you start sewing. Go to the directions for that information. And this is what you end up with.

It is larger than I expected, about 48" by 60". On the directions page, they have a short video of a race a group had to make this quilt. One lady finished in about 35 minutes! I don't know if this included sewing all the strips together into one long strip though. It took me about 2 1/2 hours yesterday afternoon/evening to make my version. I started around 2:00 pm and finished about 7:00 pm but obviously I wasn't sewing that whole time. I made dinner, ate dinner, dealt with the piano tuner, did a little work, yada yada yada.

But wow, this turned out really cute and was super fast! If you need to make a top fast, I highly recommend this one. A jelly roll makes this even faster since most of the cutting work is already done, but you could cut your own 2 1/2" strips by width of fabric from yardage. You need 40 for this size quilt. These would make great charity quilts.

I love the "jelly roll race" quilt! I've made them a bunch of different sizes by using wider strips or a LOT more than 1600" worth. I had one that ended up a weird shape so I cut it in half and made it two lap-sized/baby quilts.

I did one of these a few weeks ago and added a couple of borders and it's great! It's going to Montana for Christmas I think :) laurie
