Latest Art Group Project

This past month we tried confetti or matchstick quilts in my art group.

I posted this photo earlier to document the progress I made on the project at our meeting.

Doesn't look like much yet, does it? Below you can see my completed box of matchsticks.

Then I started placing them on my background following the general color scheme of my inspiration piece.

This took a little while and eventually looked like below.

At this point the next step is to cover everything with netting and quilt all the pieces down using monofilament thread. Keep in mind that nothing is sewn done yet or fused. The little strips are just scattered over the batting. Below is what is looks like at the moment, covered with netting and quilted just enough to hold everything in place.

Things shifted a bit during quilting so there are now places where the batting is peaking through. I have more fabric bits so I could do this again to cover the little bare spots. I don't know though. I'm not sure I like it. I'm going to just let it simmer on the design wall for a while before doing anything else with it. Maybe something will occur to me.

I've never seen this technique before. What do you do with the netting once you've done the quilting? How do you remove it easily? So far, it looks pretty neat!

It's pretty interesting. I think let it simmer. You could always applique over those spots, or embellish! Or you can cut it up into smaller pieces and rearrange. I know how you feel when you feel uncertain about it!
