UFO Bust Report - Week 32

Well ... I wouldn't really call this "progress," but I found another UFO during my recent sewing room remodel. This is from a hand applique class I took some time around 1999.

Ugh! This is soooo not my taste anymore! I never did really like hand applique either. I thought that maybe I would like it more if I learned how to do it properly. Nope. The instructor didn't help either. It bothered her that I appliqued in what she called "the left-handed manner" even though I am right-handed and sew right-handed. I tried to do it her way but was just miserable. I probably could have relearned how to do it the way she wanted me to, but what I was doing was working for me and you can't tell which "way" the pieces are sewn down. I finished the whole class but above you can see that I didn't finish the project.

Since taking this class I have adopted the policy that class projects do not require finishing, unless I want to finish them. For me, the purpose of a class is to learn a technique, not complete a project. I did learn how to hand applique, even if I don't like it and don't do it well. So this project has served it's purpose.

I'm not sure what I want to do with this block at this point. It's pretty big, about 16" square. I just have to finish up the center. I'm tempted to finish it with machine applique and maybe put some borders around it until it's big enough for a baby quilt. I could also take it to guild and put it on the in-house raffle table for someone else to finish. Or I could just throw it away. I don't know, I need to think about it for a little while longer.

Hop on over to Blackberry Creek Home Arts to see what the other UFO Busters have accomplished this week.

Process not product is my motto.
My vote is take it to the in-house raffle. Now, on to something you like!
Happy Friday!

Sorry about your class. I was surprised when I saw you were doing applique. You have a unique style that I really like, and this doesn't look like you. I like your applique, but I like to applique too. I agree with your new rule! LOL

I have an idea! You can use it for the center of the Stay At Home Robin that Sunny is starting at Quilting Dreams blog. Just add some pieced borders to it like with a regular Round Robin, except this one you will work on all by yourself, at home.

I started the My Tweets BOM at One Piece at a Time blog and quickly realized it's way above my applique level. I'm going to finish the first block and use it for the center of my Round Robin though. Of course, I love this block though.

Does one block make a UFO? Uh-oh, I'm in trouble!

i say finish it on your machine and put some borders on it for a gift to someone who does like that style :) or use it as a practice piece for your new toy (the long arm) - whatever, have a grand weekend! laurie

I say if it's not your style, put it on the raffle table! You should spend your time doing something you enjoy. It's too bad you didn't like your class much.

Some days when I'm in my sewing room, I think of other UFOs that are not on my list. I quickly push those thoughts out of my head, because I'm not exactly sure where the project is anyway! LOL.

I inherited 2 more UFOs from my mom. One is a quilt she finished and hates. It just needs to be bound. We both made on in a retreat together and both thought they were horrible. I had trouble with points matching up, and so did she. I put buttons and yo-yos over my points and couldn't wait to get rid of it, but it's one of my husband's favorite quilts. Go figure. I'm trying to figure out if I'll bind Mom's and give it away or just give it away and let someone else bind it.

The other is a table runner she made that is very Christmas-y. It needs to be quilted and bound. It is all hand applique. I'm thinking of keeping it to practice quilting on. After all, my mom made it....

I agree with Jen...do a round robin at home. It is actually quite fun! I bought a box of quilty stuff at an estate sale last year. There was a started purple hearts quilt in the box, maybe 30-36 inches square. Not something I would ever make or use, but there was so much purple fabric with it, I decided to finish it off as a round robin. I am still working on it, but I am enjoying the creative challenge, to create a new border each time around. Go for it!

I have four or five Baltimore Album blocks that I did in a class years ago. I completely lost interest after the class was over and never finished. I like hand applique, but I'm just not crazy about Baltimore Album. As you say, not my style. I like your block though. It looks sort of Christmasy.

Hi!
I hope you're choose to make this traditional applique project into a Christmas wall hanging, finish it as a gift, make it a give away prize on your blog, or donate it to the in-house quilt guild raffle. Please don't throw it away!

Even tho your tastes have changed (and don't we all have those projects?!) it is still beautiful!

Cheers!
