Stitched Sketches

In March my art group did a fun exercise. Click this link to read what I wrote about it then. After doing a few more of these we decided that we liked them all before they were colored, but once they were colored most were "meh". This lead to the idea of not coloring them. Using a white background, stitching the design in black and then quilting the background in each area in white.

I picked two of my blocks to try this out on. Here they are drawn onto the white background using a Frixon pen.

I started with the top one. Here it is stitched out but not quilted.

I went over each line twice with my walking foot and Aurifil 50 wt. black cotton thread.

Then I quilted the white areas with white thread.

After the quilting I went back over the black lines again, two more times, to emphasize them and to cover over the spots where I traveled over the black lines with the white quilting thread.

The final steps will be trimming to block to size, we are doing 12" squares, then using the pillow case method to finish the piece.

I'm looking forward to having more time to work on this one and to finish the second one.

I love this. What a clever idea. I can't wait to try it myself. Thanks for all the great step by step pictures.
