Silver Threads Quilt Show

On Saturday I went to Creede, CO to the Silver Threads Quilt Show. Unfortunately I do not have permission to show you any of the quilts in the show. However, I can show you a few photos of the vendors area.

Notice the sign on the far right that says "Creede Fire Dept." Yep! The vendors were located in the fire house which is underground. There are six bays where the trucks are parked. The trucks were pulled out for the weekend and each vendor got a truck bay as booth space. Here is the Heartstrings and Heirlooms booth.

The lighting is terrible, as you can imagine. And it is chilly. The demos occurred at the far end of the station and I didn't get a good picture of that area. Darn! I did our demo on Saturday, demonstrating a crayon technique from the book titled "Creative Quilts using Crayons" by Terrie Linn Kygar. The link will take you to the Amazon listing for the book. I'd send you to the Heartstrings and Heirlooms online store, but we sold out of the books after my demo on Saturday.

The leaves were close to their peak last weekend and it was a beautiful drive.

Both of the above photos were taken from the parking lot at the show. If you are ever in the San Luis Valley of Colorado on the third weekend in September of an even year, don't miss the Silver Threads Quilt Show in Creede. The ladies of this guild are very talented and the venue is very unique! But bring a sweater since both the show and the vendors mall are underground and it can be chilly.

Silver Threads Quilt Show

I think this may be the only underground quilt show in the world. The show is held in the community center in Creede, CO. It doesn't look like much from the outside.

The husbands of the guild members serve lunch in the covered porch area outside the show. I had a wonderful potato soup with ham and mushrooms and an apple bacon sandwich.

I wasn't bowled over by any quilt in particular in the show. So I just took pictures of the quilts that caught my eye for various reasons.

These first two were from their guild challenge.

This doll house quilt was just darling! The front of the house was on the back of the quilt.

To see the large quilts you have to walk through the unfinished mine section of the community center where the show is held.

The vendors are in a separate area next to the community center. It is in the garage of the local fire station.

Inside there are bays excavated out for the trucks to park. The vendors set up in the truck bays. So what did I buy?

Some rubbing plates and stencils to use with my Paintstiks.

Some wool beads. They were 50% off and I just couldn't resist.

A pattern and kit to make some zipper pouches. I saw this pattern on somebody's blog and seriously considered ordering it. I'm glad I waited.

I had planned to avoid buying fabric, however, that didn't work out very well.

These half yard bundles come from a store in Nebraska, Material Girl Fabrics. When I saw all the Kaffe Fassett fabrics I knew I was in trouble! Oddly, I didn't buy any Kaffe fabric though.

Creede, CO

Today we spent the day in Creede, CO. First we say a play at the Creede Repertory Theater.

We say "Zeus on the Loose," a very cute play geared toward kids. Parker loved it.

We had lunch and then went to the Mining Museum.

We took the 30 minute audio tour and it was very interesting. I will be going back to Creede in September for the Silver Threads Guild Quilt Show. Their show is in the community center that is part of the mining museum. It is very interesting to see the quilts displayed in a mine! If you are ever in the area this show is worth a stop. It is held the third weekend in September of even years.

Parker bought himself some pure gold ($4) and pure silver ($3.50) in little bottles from the museum gift shop. He is now sure that he is rich! At the moment, he is showing every neighbor he can find his new trinkets.

Old Shed

I like dilapidated old buildings. They have a sense of history and mystery. This is an old mining shed along the canyon road outside of Creede. Again, the photo was taken at retreat in early November. The door reminds me of two half-square triangle blocks.

The Canyon

This photo was taken on my walk Saturday up the canyon at the bridge.

I'm still unpacking and sorting my stuff from the retreat. I'll post photos of the tops I completed tomorrow. This morning I cut backs for these tops and I hope to get at least one quilted this week. I already have the binding made for three of the four. I'll start with one of those.

I'm Back

I got home from retreat a little after 3 pm today. I had a wonderful time and got four small charity quilt tops pieced, a couple of blocks for the raffle quilt made and I learned how to play Mexican Train.

These are just a few of the photos I took on my trip. The first is the view up the canyon taken from the just outside the back door of the building where we sew. The one below is of the main street in Creede taken as we are on our way to lunch on Saturday. I took a walk up the canyon later Saturday afternoon and got some nice pictures along way but those will have to wait for another day to post.

Packing

Today I am packing for my guild's annual retreat this weekend. Three days and two nights of sewing, food and fun! I'm taking my new featherweight now that I have learned how to thread it.
I've got a bin full of projects, more than I will probably have time to work on but I never know what I will feel like doing. I am leaving some room in the bin for any fabric or other goodies I may purchase during the weekend. We will stop at a quilt shop on the drive up tomorrow and two other shops will come up on Saturday. There are also cute stores in Creede to peruse.
I've got my list and I'm checking off items as they get packed. In case you are wondering, I am taking a small suitcase of clothes and toiletries. I just didn't take a picture of that. I do have my new camera. You can see a part of my new camera case in the last photo above, on the right of the photo.
