Feedsack Sew Together Bag

I recently taught a Sew Together Bag class at my LQS. This resulted in being commissioned to make one for someone who wanted to give it as a gift. She said her friend likes pretty much all fabrics but she really loves 30s. I don't have any 30s in my stash but I do have some vintage feed sacks. I pulled them out along with a chambray.

The HST triangles are made from two feed sack prints. I also added some hand stitching. Below is the other side.

For the interior, I pulled a neutral from my stash to go with the only color of zipper for which I had three.

I used a different feed sack print for each of the pocket interiors.

I dropped it off yesterday so that she could take it with her next week when she will see her friend. I hope she likes it! I sure do.

Retreat Exchange

My next guild retreat is coming up that last weekend in February. Each time we play a form of dirty Santa to exchange something. We started out exchanging fat quarters. After a couple of years, this wasn't very exciting anymore. So we decided to switch it up each time. Some of the things we have exchanged are charm squares, 2 1/2" strips, pin cushions, pot holders and sewing paraphernalia. At our next retreat we are exchanging "little bags."

At our January guild meeting I won a small coffee bag containing two fat quarters as a door prize. (I thought I had taken a picture of the little bag before cutting it up, but it wasn't on my camera. Either I took the picture and accidentally deleted it. Or, more likely, I just thought about taking the picture, but never got around to it.)

The bag had printing on both sides. I cut it up and used one side of it to make the above little bag. It is about 10" H by 5" W by 4" D. I pulled out my feedsack scraps to make it and used some measuring tape twill tape for the drawstring. I plan to make another little bag using the other printed side. That's a project for another day though.

Feedsack Sampler and a New Blog

I only still own one of the feedsack quilts I've made. I'm still looking for photos of the others. So this is the first one. I call it Feedsack Sampler because it contains a sample square (actually 2) of every feedsack fabric I had at the time. It was completed in May 2006.

I quilted it by hand and quilted my son's traced hand in each of the squares.

I documented the quilt quite well on the label. Click on the image to enlarge it so you can read the label.

Feedsacks

Some years ago a neighbor gave me a small moving box full of feedsacks. They were in pretty good shape considering how poorly they had been cared for. They were fun to work with and I made a few quilts with them, but they really aren't my style so I soon got tired of them. I sold some and traded some but I still have some bits left.

I found them during my recent sewing room makeover. One of the bags not pictured above is a bag of small scraps.

I played this these a little yesterday morning and made two pin cushion tops. I've even got one of them already hand quilted.

I'm not sure why I chose to play with these yesterday. Probably because they were handy and I haven't seen them in several years.

I'll try to dig up some pictures of the projects I made with these feedsacks and show you those tomorrow or Monday.
